NYC General Traffic Equipment/CooperLED AtLite INC. Pedestrian Signal NYC General Traffic Equipment/CooperLED AtLite INC. Pedestrian Signal

Recently removed from service by the NYCDOT, this polycarbonate pedestrian signal from General Traffic Equipment has a hand and man LED insert. Produced by CooperLED/AtLite INC. for New York City in the early-2000s, the unit is the first of its kind to replace the standard "DONT WALK" and "WALK" indications in NYC in the year 2000. The NYCDOT first implemented this type of LED insert in Queens and on Staten Island. After an experiment run from 2000 to 2001, the unit proved successful, and it spread throughout most of the city in the years to come. A second generation unit produced by the same manufacturer would appear shortly thereafter and become common citywide as well.

Being over ten years old, the unit itself has signs of wear and tear. And there are some burnt LEDs here and there. The average lifepsan of such a hand and man insert is between 7 to 11 years. Despite its flaws, it still illuminates well.
