Porcelain Lipton's Tea Sign Porcelain Lipton's Tea Sign Porcelain Lipton's Tea Sign

Here is a 5 foot long porcelain "Liptons Tea" sign hanging in my kitchen. The cobalt blue color with the the white letters and gloss really makes this sign pop. I believe this sign to be from over seas, it does say London on bottom right hand corner. Tea is my favorite drink, so I had to get this sign. Thanks for looking!

My Goodness My Christmas Guinness

Ho, ho, ho ... now that Christmas is over, did everyone get what they wanted? In my last post, I presented a John Gilroy painting (study for a poster) of Santa trimming a tree with the assistance of the famous Guinness mascots.

Santa finished up decorating and still had time to make his rounds; in this case, the haggard yet well-known zookeeper (who is forever taunted by the animals) wakes up to find he received a fine bottle of his favorite stout in his stocking.

As a note, this study was approved to become a poster ... anyhow ... I hope everyone had a great holiday! ~ Rob

Barbier, Benard & Turenne Brass Plate from 1934 Barbier, Benard & Turenne Brass Plate from 1934 Barbier, Benard & Turenne Brass Plate from 1934

Founded in 1862, this famous French company was responsible for the
installation of Fresnel lenses, lighthouses, iron towers, and lighthouse vessels all over the world. This brass plate is from 1934 and was possibly attached to a lense. It has a serial number and I really wish there was a way a find out exactly where this piece originated. Either way, I think it's a pretty cool piece of history :)

Blue Valley Butter ad Blue Valley Butter ad

Got this old Blue Valley Butter cardboard ad in the other day and finally put it in a frame. It is 1934 cardboard and is NOS. Great condition and colors for it's age. Found the following info about Blue Valley Creamery on wikipedia

HistoryBefore 1900, limitations in transportation and storage limited the geographic scope of creameries. To that time, creameries were primarily local, gathering cream from nearby dairy farms and distributed the produce locally. Also, cream separation was inefficient, primarily relying on gravity or centrifugal force. Advances in the railroad network and cold storage and practical implementation of a hand cream separator permitted creameries to serve larger areas and achieve economies of scale. These large de-localized creameries were referred to as "centralizers" - especially by those who suspected them of anti-competitive practice.[2][3]

Blue Valley Creamery Company was founded by Huston Wyeth[4] (1863–1925) and James A. Walker around 1900. Huston Wyeth's father, William Maxwell Wyeth, had built a hardware, saddlery and real estate empire in St. Joseph, Missouri.[5] Wyeth took over the business and branched into other endeavors, including formation of the Artesian Ice & Cold Storage Company in 1892. James Walker had been involved in the dairy business since 1888.[6] Their respective experiences with cold storage and transportation on Wyeth's part and dairy on Walker's part likely contributed to the formation and success of the venture.

The Blue Valley Creamery Company was incorporated in Missouri on May 1, 1900. Business was to be conducted in St. Joseph. Initial stock holders are listed as G. M. Johnson, James A. Walker and H.S. Hamilton. The listed business purposes are "to manufacture, buy and sell, both at wholesale and retail all kinds of creamery and dairy products, especially milk, butter, cheese and ice creams, and any and all such other articles and products as are usually bought, manufactured and sold by parties or companies engaged in a general dairy and creamery business and to purchase, hold, manage, mortgage and convey, or otherwise acquire, control and dispose of, all such real and personal estate materials, machinery, applicances and fixtures, as may be necessary to effectually conduct and perform the business and purposes for which this company is incorporated." Capital stock was increased in 1901, 1905, and 1915 based on meetings held in St. Joseph with James A. Walker as secretary and, for the first two meetings, Huston Wyeth as chair and, for the last, L.C. Hamilton as chair. The 1915 statement lists shareholders, residence and share count as: Huston Wyeth, St. Joseph, Mo., 1672; L C Hamilton, St. Joseph, Mo., 1628; C J Walker, Chicago, Ills., 1100; and J A Walker, Chicago, Ills., 1100. On 13 May 1918, Blue Valley Creamery Company, a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Missouri "transferred all of its property and assets to the Blue Valley Creamery Company, a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Delaware" and dissolved.[7]

Blue Valley was one of the larger centralizers from its inception, alleged by one source to be the largest in 1904.[8] In 1917, Blue Valley hired noted dairy educator Otto Frederick Hunziker to establish a laboratory and manage manufacturing operations. According to the FTC, in 1918, Blue Valley Creamery Company was the fourth largest U.S. butter marketing company, producing 26,484,000 pounds, 3.2% of the total market. (Swift, Beatrice and Armour were larger.)[9] Total sales for the year 1920 were $22,963,038.66.[6]

Blue Valley Creamery was acquired by Beatrice Creamery Company in 1939.[10][11] This consolidation of the two Chicago-based centralizers raised regulatory eyebrows, but was not expressly challenged.[12]

Old Pocelain Gulf Sign...sort'a

Ok, I know... it is only half a sign. This weekend, while the wife & I were out looking I found this. The shop owners allowed me to walk around the muddy rear lot of three dilapidated buildings and a ton of half repaired rotting furniture. I spied a cut piece of metal covering the opening of a cement block square about 5' x 5'. I flipped it over and found this. The staff found it on the roof and placed it over the entrance to an old bomb-shelter. I know the other half is somewhere around there. I over paid ($30) but to me the Orlando area automotive history related to this 50% sign is personally worth it!

Found Neon Sign

I found this neon over the weekend. I got a great deal but had to replace the electrical cord and replace the transformer. Cost about $20 dollars for repairs and now I have a really cool sign to display! Style Mart Clothes was a clothing maker in the forties and fifties from Mayfield, Kentucky. Joan Crawford was in their advertisements. I love it!

I saw an old friend of mine today and he gave me a whole bunch of beautiful old signs he's collected over the years. He has a lot of really great ones. He has worked in resource protection for the State Parks Dept. for many years - hence the next set of signs i'm going to post. The Utoco and Cyclone Fence signs are both porcelain enamel and the other ones are not. Can the UTOCO one be restored? I think Utoco was a division of Texaco in Utah, but i'm not sure.

Here's a few of the signs a friend of mine gave me today. He worked for the state of california in parks/rec and resource protection for many years. Here's some of the unusual signs he gave me. the second one has a tag on the back saying that it was made by the Sign-making division of Folsom State Prison. That's a rea beauty which i'd never seen before. I have quite a collection of old signs now - many more that i haven't shown on this site yet. Some of them are old and some are new, but the newer ones are all interesting too.
